IPF ARB Bumper Fog Light Install with Toyota OEM Switch

sbechtold did a super job with his install info so I figured I would add this info on installing the IPF Fog Light Kit 9249FCK using a Toyota Tacoma OEM Fog light switch. Things you will need:

Toyota Tacoma Fog Light Switch (84160-04010)
IPF Fog Light Kit 9249FCK (Includes relay, harnesses, etc)
Shrink tubing, electrical tape, wire taps, etc

Optional:
Toyota Connector Housing (90980-11090)
Termainal Wires for Connector (82998-12340 4 required)

There are two harnesses that come with the kit, one called MD02 (the main harness) and the UL002 (feed harness). The reason for this is that their intent is in order to have the fog lights function you must have the marker lights or head lamps on. To make it easy, I spliced the UL002 feed harness into the driver side ARB marker light harnesses that was already painstakingly completed. You splice the blue wire in the UL002 harness to the green wire in the ARB marker light harness. You splice the brown wire from the UL002 harness to the ground in the ARB marker light harness.

The UL002 harness plugs into the MD02 harness. You connect the red loop to the battery, the ground loop to the bolt on the fender well near the battery. You need to mount the relay to the inside fender wall and fish the two red bare wires through the rubber grommet on the drivers side firewall. You connect the other end of the MD02 harness to the two fog lights.

To prepare the fog lights for install, you attach spring plates to each light (2 per light) and then attach these assemblies to the surround that is included with the ARB bumper (not the metal piece you attach the marker lights to). Bolt up the surrounds to the bumper and you are ready to go.

I wanted to keep the install as factory looking as possible, so with the help of Audiox, I managed to make the install work with the Tacoma fog lamp switch. There are four terminals on the Tacoma switch. Looking at the rear of the switch with the locking tab on the right and starting at the top, the terminals are as follows:
1. Input 12V from IPF Harness ( this is the red wire that comes off the UL002 IPF Harness). You can check continuity from bare end wire of the harness to the red wire that is attached to the connector where the UL002 comes in.

2. Red wire feed to relay (this is the other red wire that comes in from the IPF harness)

3. 12V for switch light (I jumpered this from terminal 1 so that when teh marker/head lamps are on the switch is illuminated)

4. Ground

You could solder directly to the switch, but I bought the connectors and the 4 wire inserts so that I could splice the wires into the harness and it would plug into the switch. After you make your connections, you pop out the blank that is in the switch bank, and fish the harness through, connect the harness to the switch and you are in business...so I thought. The switch has two raised rails (maybe 1/16" wide) on the left side of the switch (when looking at the front of the switch). I used a utility knife and filed them down and it went into the FJ hole perfectly. For some reason there wasnt notches in the hole in the dash to accept the raised rails on the switch.

Essentially, the fog lamps are powered when the marker or head lamps are on, and the switch is backlit when the marker lights or headlamps are on (same as the other FJ switches).

Feel free to let me know if anything wasnt clear.

Jay

That's a single circuit switch - ground, 12V power, trigger wire for light relay. Are you sure that's a factory switch ? Most Toyota switches have inset terminals for the factory plug assembly...

Do you have a good picture of the switch from the front? How does this switch differ from the rocker switch with the small amber light that Chris recommended from Dallas?

Re: IPF ARB Bumper Fog Light Install with Toyota OEM Switch

The same switch I used! Looks great in the dash. A couple questions:

- Can you turn on your fog lights with only the DRLs on?
- Is your amber light on dimly when the fog lights are off?
- Do you have a picture of where you mounted the relays and ground by the battery?

I also used that switch for my IPF 900XSs and mounted both switches in the far left positions of the center console.

Re: IPF ARB Bumper Fog Light Install with Toyota OEM Switch

I am going to install mine this weekend. I have two of them and my IPF lights have have two settings -

One for the fog only and one for fog and driving.. So I need to figure out how to wire a switch for on/off and one for fog/driving and fog..... Any wiring experts?
