I run the same tires on a 17X8.5" wheel. I air down to 25 psi and they run fine. Just an FYI....
Ok, great.
Thanks.

Re: Airing-down 265/75R16 BFG AT T/A KO on 8.5" MB V-Drive wheels?

A bigger tire will generally be able to handle a wider wheel better because the footprint is wider. I say generally because you do have skinny and wide tires. A 255/85-16 is 33.5 inches tall by 10.5 inches wide. No wider than your 265's. A 285/75-16 is 32.7 inches tall by 11.3 inches wide. The 285 would be able to handle the 16x8.5 easily. Anyway, my general rule of thumb is to check the tires at some point in October. If the tread looks good then they should be okay for winter. If it appears to be borderline then I go and get some new tires. Works for me. I try to get as many miles out of my tires as possible before they become a safety hazard, i.e. no tread. That is my comfort level. Yours is different. Nothing wrong with that. As to your tires wearing so fast maybe they didn't have enough air in them? On my LR the psi that I ran was 32. More than stock, but it seemed to work just fine. Wasn't too harsh by any means. Hope this helps some!

Finally! Man, I've noticed this about a thousand times over the years when running this tire on other vehicles....so is that all it is?

The other day when I was getting gas, I noticed it again on Sandi. So, I got out the presure gauge....... they're all fine (as long as 35 is fine - that's what Discount set them at and I've just left them there).

...and I forgot if I mentioned this yet, but I'm thinking of airing down to 20 for trail runs to see how it goes (not this one on this coming Sunday, because I don't have an air-up system in place yet). Is that too far down with this setup?

steven
I have those exact tires on my TT and they buldge at 40 psi. It's normal!

1. Radial tires buldge, it's just what they do.

2. I found this for you, What are Radial Tires?

3. I will be running 20 psi on these tires later today at the Ttrail Teams invitational here in Big Bear, I will let you know the results.

Don't put to much more thought into the buldge, It's notmal I tell ya!

Ok, that's good to know. So, a couple years down the road, when it's time to get new tires, I'll be fine stepping up to the 285s. Any larger, or is that it on these rims?

Ya, like I said, we'll be switching to the stockers on the stock ris for the winter and only run the BFGs in the summer to get more life out of them.

Well, I've left it at 35 where Discount put them upon install.

Good to know. That article helped emensely. Thanks a bunch.
I can put that issue to rest now...forever.

So, some day (when I retire I suppose, but earlier if at all possible), I'll have a play vehicle (it'll probably be Sandi - once we buy the hybrid version to replace her for the daily-driver) with a set of wheels with bias-plies on them just for off-roading and just deal with the shorter tread life as part of the fun (i.e. tread life won't be a consideration, but only how well they handle off-road, on the rocks, etc).

Big Bear?!? Cool. I've been there (back in 19998 or 99). I wasn't off-roading quite yet at that time, but I really liked that area. We went up there to stay over-night after rock climbing in Joshua for the day.

Yes, please do report back regarding how that PSI worked for you....try to get some photos of how they look going over obstacles too if at all possible.

Thanks!

Re: Airing-down 265/75R16 BFG AT T/A KO on 8.5" MB V-Drive wheels?

You could definitely go bigger with those rims if you want to. A 295/75-16 would work. Slightly taller and wider than a 285. Or you could go to a 305/70-16. Same height as a 285 but wider. They would even work on a 315/75-16 which is a 35x12.50. So, you definitely have options down the road. If you ever have any questions you can always send me a message if you want. Take it easy!

Big Bear is awesome, doing a trail a bit more technical tomorrow but, for you, I aired down to 22 for this run: Trail Teams Invitational May 10/11 Big Bear CA (Report) and the ride was definitely softer but I will probably do 20 psi tomorrow. wanna know how that goes?

Ok, cool.
Thanks, Zane.
I will definitely try to keep you in mind when that time comes.

Wow. So, I could put a 12.5" wide tire on an 8.5" rim and still be OK - even with airing down?

Very cool.
I read the report and comments and saw the photos.
Sounds like a great time.

Yes, indeed - post again here after today's run if you can.
Thanks.

steven

p.s. I'm kind of out of it, and I didn't read enough into signatures, etc yet, but...are you in any of those shots?
