beach driving

I recently went beach driving and my access door on the skid plate came off and my trailer light plug was hanging down. I don't see how the sand could have affected the trailer light plug. I have it secured now with rubber bands until I can get it to the dealer. My guess is they never bolted it to where it should go.

Re: beach driving

Did you scrape bottom while crossing some ruts perhaps?

Re: beach driving

I'm sure I scraped bottom. I can live with the access door on the skid plate coming off but it shouldn't come off so easily. The trailer light plug must not have been bolted up because I found it hanging and no bolt would have broken, it was just sand.

Re: beach driving

by "access plate" do you mean the piece of plastic (oval shaped) that helps keep dirt, etc out of the oil change area? If so, yes, they come off easily. Especially in water crossings. I don't think it's a bad thing...will just get dirty in that area now that you don't have "protection".
No clue about your trailer plug...mine is pretty secure. They should have secured it for you.

I had to cross some water ~15inches deep about 10 feet long. I found the plastic oval on the other side of the water. I was lucky to find it. I lost one last year on my 05 4runner while at the beach and they aren't cheap. I think next time I go I may duct tape it and see if that keeps it on better:-0

As far as beach driving went the fj did very well. My house was 8 miles up the beach. I aired down to 23 psi. On my way in I had to take my recovery strap out of the box, for the first time to help someone who was stuck. I didn't pull them out because I was still airing down. I saw alot of people stuck. I even saw a 3rd gen 4runner stuck:-(, with a f-150 pulling him out, that pained me some.

I saw 1 black fj on the beach one day but that was it.

Re: beach driving

The piece of plastic over the drain plug is useless anyway. Like MissFJ said, all it'll do is keep a little bit of dirt from going up into that area. When it comes to protection from rocks or sticks... I wouldn't trust it.
