4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
So a guy comes into the bar yesterday with a Pro Comp tshirt. I chat with him briefly like I try to do with everyone who comes in. He says works with a wheel manufacturer who just fitted wheel and tire combo on a 2006 Tacoma. A 6 inch lift and 35" tires! And he claims a similar system for the FJ isnt far behind. Just keep your eyes peeled. Looks pretty cool on a Taco.
Here's a pdf.

Your teacher lied, there IS such thing as a stupid ass question.
I've seen that Tacoma on the road - it looks good. But the kit doesn't do much for wheel travel or articulation, just lets you put on bigger tires. Pro Comp suspensions are more about height and price point then quality and function, based on past experience. Hopefully, that will change with the FJC kit (if it gets produced at all...)

Yes, it will be interesting to see. i had a 6" procomp suspension lift on my F-150 w/ 35's and many thought it looked good as well. I bit big for my taste.
I do agree it looks very proportional on the new body tacomas since they are a bit bigger physically than previous generation models.
To early to say, but I'm guessing 6" lift is too much for the FJ and I'm all for modding and lifting.
Cruiserlarry, what is it about this kit that doesn't do much for articulation. Is it not a coils and shock swap?

The procomp kits for this suspension style usually use lifted spindles and a coil spacer, with a coilover shock as an optional upgrade. the spindle relocates the wheel downward for the aditional height, but does not affect control arm spacing or length for increased articulation. And becuase of the taller spindle neck, you must use wheels with lesser backspacing to clear the upper spindle area...I am biased, as we've had nothing but headaches with procomp suspensions at our shop for 20 years...

thanks for the clarification. I didn't really have a choice at the time of what lift to go with for the new F-150. Only Procomp was available and that's the only one Ford Dealerships where putting on their trucks. Plus I knew way less than I do know about lifts and such.
Again, your experience and expertise I trust.

No insult to your equipment was intended, and the Ford twin traction beam suspension is a completely different animal from the FJC's coilover w/upper and lower control arm suspension. Everyone was making the same basic stuff for the ford (all copies of the original Rancho long raduis arm Ford kit) at the time. It will be interesting to see if mfgrs step up with more functional products for a vehicle that's being marketed to the off-road community directly...
