Dealer said "no" to rock rails

I just bought a FJ Cruiser today. The dealer said I wouldn't have rock rails on the vehicle when it came in. He said "they're not making them right now". Are there problems with them? Or are they just out of stock?

I think aftermarket rails are your best bet....better quality and maybe even cheaper price

Re: Dealer said "no" to rock rails

Not sure if the after market are "better quality" but they certainly provide differing solutions (step, extended protection, etc.) I have after market on my Rubicon, the powder coat rusted after one winter (and yes they were considered very high quality and from a respected company)

Re: Dealer said "no" to rock rails

I just installed stock rock sliders. They seem fine, but they are my first ones that I have ever owned.

Comparing the design to what I have seen on the aftermarket stuff I could say that I am fairly impressed. The mounting design on the stock rails seems more substantial and distrubuted along the length of the rails.

I purchased them from http://www.toyotapartsoutlet.com/

Did not have to move the brake lines, which I think you have to do with the Bentups, I don't know about the others.

Paid w\o shipping $390.60 for a pair. They are fully powdercoated (at least that's how their advertized they have a slight texture to the finish). If you check some of the aftermarket ones you will find that they do not always include a finish and that will cost extra.

The stock rails don't stick out that much. But they do a little bit, enough so that I notice it while exiting the vehicle. I wonder if there are going to be a lot of banged shins with the more extended rails.

I am kind of glad I went with them as if I went with the more extended aftermarket ones I would possibly be running into space considerations in the garage.

Looking at the stock rails I guess if I needed them extended it wouldn't be that hard, additional hardware could either be welded or bolted to them.

I want to keep weight to a minimum, I would be interested to see a comparison in the weights of all the available rails. The shipping weight for the stock rails was 39 # each, so I figure that they could weigh anywhere from between 36 # to 38 #.

Re: Dealer said "no" to rock rails

The stock rails are well made and will serve you well. Not to mention you got a great price. I had the stock rails and recently switched to the DEMELLO rails. They weigh 40 lbs each. I went the route of DEMELLO sliders, because they stick out farther from the body and offer more protection to the sides of your FJ then the stock rails. While I haven't tested them yet, they appear much stronger than the stock rails. They also make it easier for my kids to get into the FJ. To your point of banged up shins, it's actually the opposite. You rub the back of your calf on the rails every time you get in/out of the FJ. Not a big deal unless they have mud on them...
