Lift = bad CV joints

Apparently no one has thought of this EVER, because numerous searches come up with absolutely no results relating to "CV" or "CV JOINT" etc..

I want to lift the FJ with "A" lift, (unknown) but am worried about premature wear on the CV joints and boots. Keep in mind they are always spinning!
(unlike old yotas with good old manual hubs)

My FJC has 6700 miles... if I put on a lift at 7000, will the CV's be worn out by 20K? The constant increased angle isnt good for them, or the boots.

Anyone with a lift up front, please take a picture of the CV angle and post it here. (PLEASE!) Inform how high the lift is etc. Knowledge is power!

Re: Lift = bad CV joints

Are you saying ALL lifts do this? Had a spacer lift on my 99 Taco and it had sh!tty problems! Went thru 3 boots. In the shop every six months (the sides would alternate breaking). Finally broke down in pismo with the coils resting on the bump stop. Wrenching into the night in sand
Also had wheel spacers...I'm assuming combination of both didn't help. Love it when people tell me the spacer (wheel or lift) isn't a problem tho

EDIT: therefore also interested in seeing the angles on those that have lifted...

Re: Lift = bad CV joints

This has actually been covered extensively with Tacoma owners. 1st gen Tacos could only reliably be lifted 2 to 2-1/2 inches without premature wear to the CV joints. Downey Off-Road went so far as to offer a set of new shafts that I believe were based on Porsche parts. I haven't researched this topic for the newer design on the FJ/Tacoma/Prado...whatever. I think you'll find the same on the FJ's...eventually. The FJ design might be more forgiving to lifting, though...only time will tell.

Yup, the only way to lift it without compromising the angle is to lower the entire front differential assembly, i.e full size Chevy lift with all that bracketry.

Re: Lift = bad CV joints

If you can't be happy with a very mild lift (with much improved damping) over stock with an adjustable coilover, then just do an SAS. Getting 3" or more out of a coilover just isn't a reliable way to do it. Check out the All-Pro website for Tacoma suspension...you'll see a diff drop spacer. I'm sure the FJ will have one shortly

Indeed... or like this. (below) Thats one of my old Toyotas I lifted.
Anyone with a coil/spacer lift please post a picture!

Lifted Bored Clerk, I would be very happy with a 2-3" lift for the FJC. I just cant afford a coil over kit.

Re: Lift = bad CV joints

I called my dealer's service department, and they said there is a "list" of warranty things voided by lifting, and that they would not do the installation... *sigh*

That said, I do need to compensate for the weight of the ARB up front to bring it back to normal, plus one inch to level... so I'm going for it. Donahoes, camburgs, allpro are variable lift, so you don't have to go a full 3" and alter your CV angles too much.

Re: Lift = bad CV joints

Well, if you can't pony up the bucks for a coilover kit (just like me) then I would just hold off on a lift until you can afford it. I've not heard anything good about spacer kits...I'd steer clear.

Re: Lift = bad CV joints

I talked to All-Pro on this... and they said that this is something that Toyota corrected with the FJ over
the Taco...

If you look at the Axle in the front... it actually angles upward to the tire end of the axle... when you lift
the FJ 2-3"... it angles only slightly down...

I was ready to buy the $500 control arms and the drop kit for the differential from All-Pro... and they told
me that the drop kit was not needed and that the A-Arms would only help with strength...

SO there is no real issue... See my Pictures Below of the axle angle before and after the lift...

Befor...

After...

As far as Warrentee... Only Toyota can make the call on that... But there will be no big change on axle angle as there was on the Taco...
