Hey there Larry! Thanks so much for the ride info, Racerunners huh! Have not heard of them but I'm sure there top of the line and big money. I talked to Dylan today at Icon and he said they're about ready to distribute a new long travel rear shock with reservoir. They use a 218lbs spring now, think they will use/recommend a heavier spring?

I expect you'll be one of the first to try them. See you next month.
Slightly off topic but the new 2.5" diameter rear shock that ICON is about to release was shown at the Ouray Summit last week so you may want to ask Dylan if they can be custom-valved to match the heavier OME 896 rear springs you're thinking of changing to.

Thank for the heads-up Thong. By the way, great pics of the Summit you posted!

You're welcome and thanks. BTW, I talked to Dylan and he mentioned that the new shocks with the integral reservoirs act somewhat like bypass shocks for the last inch or so of shock travel with a 20% increase in compression. Sorry but I didn't think of taking pics of these new shocks but I'm sure Dylan or Jeremy will post them up shortly.

Here's a CAD rendering posted on TTORA:

Re: OME 896 Heavy Rear Springs

OME Heavy lift.....320lbs in rear with gear and storage box, 240 lbs extra in front and very smooth ride. Often haul a utility tralier with 450ish lbs of tongue weight loaded with gear, 16' alum. boat, motor etc. etc. and still rides and handles great.

No worries Thong, Dylan did say pics will be up soon, possibly in a day or two. So can the valving be adjusted to compensate for the stiffer spring?

The short answer is yes by changing the valve shims. Since you're planning to run much stiffer springs, the shocks should have less compression damping and more rebound than the 218 lbs/inch springs would.

Re: OME 896 Heavy Rear Springs

I don't know if this has been posted or a link has been posted but I found it interesting and wanted to share the info. Although it is simplified for the laymen it is quite interesting.

Re: OME 896 Heavy Rear Springs

I was running the OME 895's and Icon rear shocks when we did Calico Clean-Up this year. After loading down for the trip my FJ looked like a Baja rig. As soon as I got back I ordered my OME 896's. I love them. The Icon shocks worked ok for a while but I could tell they weren't set up right for the heavies. So before the Summit and Kokopelli run I wanted to fix that. I called Larry and ordered a set of the Sway-A-War Race Runners to back them up with and removed the Icons. As soon as I drove out of my driveway I noticed the major difference. During the Summit and Kokopelli trip to include "Top of the World" and the "Rose Garden" in Moab) fully loded they performed flawlessly. I couldn't be happier with the set up now.
