I got a base model 4x4 AT in Titanium Metallic. Its a pure base model with no extra packages (doesn't even have cruise control). It does have a few individual options (side airbags, running boards, roof rack). I'm a big off road fan, or at least I used to be. I used to go out to Ocatillo Wells and Glamis (deserts in CA) in my '87 Pickup once in a while, and I understand how important a locker can be...so I feel a little cheated without one.
Is it possible to add ATrac or the locker to my base model 4x4? I'm not concerned with the cost, because as of now I can't afford a thing. I just want to know if it can be done sometime in the future.
I don't want to be one of the millions of SUV owners who never leave the pavement.

ATRAC - pretty sure you can, in fact, afford this one...LOOK HERE
edit: by the way, the link above? thats a sticky right at the top of the 4x4/performance mods page of the board. not to be a search-nazi, but maybe try looking around a little bit before you ask questions, eh? nothing personal bro, welcome to the Forum!
rear locker - im assuming you are talking about the TRD e-locker? the third is easy, its just a matter of pulling the open third and installing one with the e-locker. the part that might give you trouble is the wiring; are the harness and relays for the e-locker standard (installed in every vehicle, even without the locker, a la ATRAC) or do they get left out on those that done come equipped from the factory. Anybody with the FSM have an answer? if you arent concerned about plug-n-play downey makes a conversion kit to make the e-locker cable actuated (i.e. manually operated, you pull a lever to engage/disengage it), though i do not know if they make one for this particular diff. worth checking into.

Re: Is it possible to add ATrac or Locking Dif later?
I dont have either atrac nor rr diff lock, I tried to jump the white-black/pink-green wires to see if atrac can be activated while in 4lo but nothing happened. I'll wait to the atrac btton to arrive to see if its true that -If there's no RR diff lock cannot add atrac-.
Whats the TRD e-locker ?? and the thing about "...of pulling the open third and installing one with the e-locker."?

The "open third" refers to the third member (open or non-locking rear differential) as a complete assembly.

yes both can be added. Atrac is cheap and easy, see the Atrac sticky. locker will be much more expensive and complicated.
t5gt - hit the nail on the head. The price for a rear differential locker is $340 MSRP for the AT vehicles, either 4x2 or 4x4. This is a factory option because the fulltime open and locker version differentials are different models: B200A for the fulltime open and B20N for the locker version. The time to option the type of rear differential is during the build on the production line. I'm not sure the B200A can be modified, or whether it needs to be exchanged for the B20N. Either way the cost will be substantial if performed in a shop. Furthermore the locker is activated eletronically, so wiring, switch and connection to ECU will be required. A cut-away of the two differentials is show below.
Finally the A-Trac will not work on vehicles without the Rear Differential Locker. It remains to be seen if the ECU can be tricked into thinking there is a rear locker, when one doesn't exist, so the A-Trac can be made to work.

No, the ECU can not be tricked into thinking there is a rear locker. There is a part number split for the TRAC ECU. One w/locker, another without rear locker, MT and AT, for a total of 4 seperate part numbers. You would have to change the TRAC ECU to the one w/locker to add A-TRAC. A very pricy proposition.
There is also a part number split for the rear axle housing, w/locker and without. Let's see some pics of the pumpkin where it bolts on to the housing, I'll bet it is different.
