Homemade snorkel!!

First and foremost the credit goes to Trader over here New snorkel...homebuilt! - FJC Central.com - Forums, Friends, FJ's and Fun!. I have been tossing around this idea for quite awhile now, well today I did it. I really did not think that 2.5 tube was going to cut it, I opted for 3" pvc. I used 4 90 degree elbows and 1 45 degree elbow near the top plus some straight pvc for the upright piece.
I also ordered a Safari ram air head for the top but the elbow will work for now.
Here is a pic of the mock up of where the tube runs through the cowl area. I had to cut a big chunk out of the plastic and had to grind some of the cowl to get it through there, still better than cutting a four inch hole in the fender. I used one screw through the bottom of the cowl to hold the tube.
Here is pic of the tube coming through the cowl grill, had to also grind some of the tabs with a burr bit to get it to fit.
All mocked up!

I used some satin black Krylon Fusion spray bomb to pretty it up. Red Scotch Brite and clean up with alcohol is how I prepped it.

Don't forget to fill the holes in the air box. I used a couple of screws and seam sealer.

Found these brackets at the hardware store. Attached with screws and two way tape for the A-pillar, don't forget to clean pillar with alcohol.

More in next post.

Re: Homemade snorkel!!

After paint was dry I used some clear urethane seam sealer from my bodyshop, to connect it all, I was going to use pvc cement but I may want to take this apart someday.
Once I got it all glued and the two way tape attached, it felt real solid. I took it for a spin and there is no noise or movement what so ever.
I probably will trim it down some once I get the ram air head.

I will get some better pics from a distance tomorrow.

not bad I have been thinking of doing the same. and excellent move on not using pvc cement. the set up you have will have to be removed to change out the windshield properly they have to remove the cowl where your snorkel comes up through. But looks good.

Hopefully I can get it pulled apart if the time comes. If not I can cut it off and start over again. It was real cheap!!!

Yep soon as I get my ram air head I will trim it down. I left it long cause I did not know how big the head will be. Thanks, Justin

Re: Homemade snorkel!!

Looking at the pictures of your engine compartment looks like you could use the snorkel. I kind of wish that aftermarket design also use the same route seems more straight forward. Nice job.

Re: Homemade snorkel!!

Way to go! Functional and inexpensive. You can certainly afford to tweak it as time goes one. This looks like it'll breath better then the ARB version.

Re: Homemade snorkel!!

there are 2 big things i like about this snorkel besides the functionality.

1. price
2. no hole in the fender
