Onboard air options

I am getting ready to start a job here on Haley Mountain, not a mountain by western standards, but pretty danged rough. There are some trails, mostly old skid paths. Trails are washed bad w/ a lot of granite and limestone outcrop and boulders. Just the kind of area where airing down would help. This is an excellent excuse to visit the onboard air question.

Did a quick search but don't have my questions answered yet. Are there any options beside Viair and ARB? Do I need a tank? No air tool plans. Looking for a permanent install, preferably under the hood. The back is already taken w/survey equip. Will I need to go to a dual battery system?

While we're at how about auto tire deflators.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Re: Onboard air options

Hey, I was JUST about to post something similar. I want something that can handle 200psi, but with a small tank, tho I figure if I go that far, might as well have air tools as an option (i figure that's just one more pressure regulator but I can probably just put that on the line with the tools....?)

here's something i found while looking:
On-Board Air Compressor

Re: Onboard air options

I've been considering adding a similar setup. I was thinking of adding my Masterflow MF1050 with an airtank and then piping air to the rear of my FJ. This unit works fast and has given me excellent performance!

I also considered this unit but I haven't made any decision yet. Here's the link: Wolo HIGH-OUTPUT 110-PSI 12-VOLT AIR COMPRESSORS AND STORAGE TANK KITS : JC Whitney: Auto Parts & Accessories

Or this one: Air Lift QuickSHOT On-board Compressor & Air Storage : JC Whitney: Auto Parts & Accessories

Try this link for air compressor comparisons: Tire Inflator Comparison

You might consider Straun deflaters. They can be preset to a particular air pressure. I have a set of these and they work fine for me.

Another option is the ARB deflater. It removes the valve stem and you can air down in a hurry. It allows for easy checks of tire pressure as it airs down your tires.

What part of MO do you live in? I'm in Richland, just west of the Fort.

Hope this helps!

That looks very similar to the viair.

I'm in Patterson, on the South side of Sam A Baker State Park, about 2 1/2 hours from you. Ah Fort Lost in the Woods after 12B OSUT I swore I'd never go back, then 12 mos later I was there for Unit Leader Battleskills (Sapper) I made good on the promise after that butt kicking.

THe ARB deflator is great--I like it a lot more than the Staun deflators. THe Stauns can be a real pain in the a$$ to calibrate and keep calibrated.

Re: Onboard air options

My custom onboard air setup. Air Compressor Finished
Fills all four tires from 15psi to 35 psi in less than ten minutes. Runs air tools for short periods of time.

Re: Onboard air options

I used a Tsunami/Superflow (MF-1050/MV50) portable air compressor that is hard wired and permanently mounted in the engine bay. 50ft of coiled air hose and tire inflator in the rear. It can be upgraded to use tanks if wanted; supposedly the same compressor used in Viair's kits (but I don't know this first hand).

I like it! It'll air up all 4 tires in ~10 minutes or less. It will actually run my air tools (though I buy very efficient air tools) for short times. One day I might add a tank, but for my current needs it's not necessary.

Don't get the MV40/MF-1040 series they're different and weak. The 50 series is the one you want. Watch Ebay, they go on sale occassionally, I got mine for $28 shipped to my door the first of this year.

Re: Onboard air options

Looks like the same one they're selling at costco.

Not worried about the heat under the hood?

Re: Onboard air options

Just bought a 2nd 10# Powertank for backup which should eliminate worries about running out of CO2 and reduce the frequency of runs to the gas shop to fill up.

Re: Onboard air options

I have the Extreme Outback setup and I love it
Onboard air install

They have a variety of compressors to pick from and all the parts to set it up however you want.
Super tough and runs air tools which is a nice backup plan.
