Exhaust: TRD or Stock

Since I don't have the regular exhaust, I was hoping someone could answer me this. Sometimes I find that the TRD exhaust note (very ricer like) is a bit annoying. Other times I am so accostomed to hearing it, it doesn't bother me. But, after some examination, I was wondering about the difference in the oem reg exaust, and the TRD. Is there really any difference besides the tip? Also, what if I just cut the tip off (minds out of the gutters please!)? Would that make it any quieter?

Re: Exhaust: TRD or Stock

if you cut the tip off, it's a circumcised TRD muffler that would still be loud.

It's a cat-back system. The sound primarily comes from the muffler, not the tip.

that being said....this is one of those search topics. No offense and happy Friday

Re: Exhaust: TRD or Stock

The TRD exhaust is suppose to be a performance exhaust that has less back pressure. The stock exhaust is very quite. The TRD exhaust has a little bit of growl to it. The growl comes from the muffler, not the exhaust tip, it is just there for looks. To get ride of the sound, you'll need a different muffler.

Thanks fellas, I don't know much about exhausts, but I am not going to circumcise FJ. Supersizing is another subject.......

Re: Exhaust: TRD or Stock

I have had people tell me 2 different things about my TRD exhaust.

1) Sounds like a modified Diesel exhaust, I thought that one was interesting because I haven't heard a diesel exhaust sound like that before.

2) Sounds like the exhaust out of a boat when the boat is on a plane in the water..... I kinda understood that one, it is simular.

Re: Exhaust: TRD or Stock

I am not sure where the evidence to support that claim comes from ( Flowmaster)

I have conducted Dyno tests on a Magnaflow system and can tell you it is one of the best if not the best system on the market BUT expensive.

Any true performance cat-back will be the following:
Stainless Steel.
Mandrel bent
"See thru" design" You will look thru one end of the muffler and see out the other end.
Very free-flowing
The correct size for the application (Bigger is not better)
Don't believe what you hear about back-pressure.

Many exhaust systems are noise makers OR noise mufflers.

Then there is "True performance" designs (like Magnaflow)

I don't care what exhaust you have NOTHING makes the sound of the MOTOR different. That sound is dependent on the firing order and type of motor. i.e. Mustang V8 -vs- Camaro V8. They sound different.
Our V6 is going to sound a certain way period.

First FJ I test drove had the TRD exhaust on it. I LOVED the sound for a stock truck (I got in not expecting to hear any kind of engine). After walking around after the drive I noticed the TRD exhaust. A month later I drove one w/o the exhaust and wasn't happy w/ the fact that I couldn't hear ANYTHING (granted, even w/ the TRD exhaust this is by far the quietest vehicle I own...except for the wife's of course). Personally, I need to hear my engine when I drive...just puts a warm, fuzzy feeling in my heart. The TRD isn't my ultimate exhaust, but it will hold me over until warranty runs out and then I can have some fun. But, if you're the type that wants peace & quite all the time, go stock.

Re: Exhaust: TRD or Stock

I think your questions has been answered by the previous posts. With that in mind, I like the TRD exhaust. I have it on my 06 Tacoma and my FJC. I like it because of the warranty aspect and the note. In opposition to your "very ricer like" comment, I get compliments from most on the sounds. Remember, this is a six cylinder Toyota motor. Do not expect the American 8 dual exhaust sound. I knew the HP gain, if any, would be minimal. I enjoy the look of the tip and the sound and that's it is a true factory option.
And here's your change. $.02

Right there is worth the $$. As I have said over and over. Good Cat-backs are ExPensive! $800 and up, some 1200 and up. This is a good value at around $400. Made by a good company (Borla) S.S., mandrel bent.
