We use synthetic lines on all our winches here at Metal Tech. We are a dealer for winchline.com and get anything they offer plus custom lines to order. The aluminum fairlead is more than sufficient for the synthetic line and it used by most competition rock crawlers.
It was mentioned before, the sleeve that comes with the synthetic line is to protect the line from sharp objects while winching. Also if you break the synthetic line you can repair on the trail by weaving it in a special way to keep on using it. We had this happen to us at Rubicon and still run the same line.
Ontop of all that, switching over to synthetic line you will loose an additional 20lbs over the steel cable which isn't significant but everything helps to reduce the over all weight of the FJC.

For my spare steel winch line i use a old motorcross tyre that i coil the winchline in and then just ziptie it to keep it neat
I am looking at getting synthetic and was planning on having the current cable made into two sections to be used as a winch line extension. I was trying to figure out a way to store it.
As the Guiness beer commercials would say, BRILLIANT.
The tyre trick is cheap and it works . And it is good enough for me.
As for synthetics .
the Absolute best synthetic at this time is the Dynex Dux Developed in Iceland and used in the Arctic Expedition last year . size for size it is up to 43% stronger than a DML netherlands SKF 75 dyneema and has twice the serviceable life of the SKF . you can also get it sheathed in a poly coating and even with a centre core. the stuff is also about 2 times more expensive Dyneema

I have been wanting a group buy on synth line forever!
Volhoo, depending on the nastiness of the kinks, sometimes a good hard spool will cure them. I had a couple nasty ones in my line from use, but when I got home I hooked up to a telephone pole on a hill, had a buddy work the winch and steer the truck in neutral towards the pole while I (wearing good gloves) fed the line neatly back onto the spool. This loads the line and makes it neater, eliminating potential tangle problems, and makes it easier to use when needed again. I left it like that for months (didn't get stuck) and when I used it again the kinks were no longer there.
Synth is expensive, but with definite advantages (and some disadvantages like Homedadr stated on rocks in the desert etc.), so this may help extend your steel cables service life while you budget in synth.
Hope this helps and is not a repost... I didn't read the entire thread

Also, if anyone wants to make the Delrin rollers more affordable, let me know and I'll get a price on some material for a group buy. The machining is dead simple, and I could turn them out very easily. There is no reason for them to break the bank... Delrin is not THAT expensive.
