4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
I was referring to "You know what, I'm never going to have the desire to tackle anything that they have not already tackled with the stock FJ." The stock FJ part of that statement doesn't hold because they can mangle their FJs and not be responsible for repairs. To avoid repairs you need armor, lift, tires and better parts. I wasn't only referring to the ATRAC/Locker hack.
Understood. But I have no shame admitting I'm not going to off-road my FJ this extreme, so it's not that important to me. I'm not discounting its benefit for those that really need it.
The only thing I ask is that when someone tackles an obstacle that they needed this feature to get over...please take some pics & post on this forum...I would be extremely interested to see that kind of action (as I'm sure others would). Oh yeah, and no cheating. You must try your damn-dest to get over it without the mod...then once that fails, time for you to break out "Super FJ Crawl Mode" and show what it can do. I think that’s a pretty reasonable request. Thanks.

YES...My left foot gets sad if it doesn't have a clutch pedal near by...
That might be tough to find in an FJ with good tires + locker + standard Atrac, but I promise ill try...
That's all I can ask for...

Just made this mod and it seems to work well. Now, the trails near my house are quite easy and I didn't get a true test of both systems. I used the locker and got the ATRAC to kick in for like 2 seconds going up an incline, but it worked.
Just a note, if you are worried about your ATRAC being on with the locker, you can turn off ATRAC via the dash switch.

As far as A-Trac with the rear locked, ATRAC only applies itself when on that axle is senses one wheel spining faster than the other. Since the rear is locked, both tires spin at the same speed and ATRAC will not apply itself to the rear axle, only the front when it senses one wheel in the front spining.
Isn't the wheel spinning in front locked to the back via the locked center so it can only spin in unison with the two locked rears? Thus, wouldn't you, effectively, be braking three wheels to try to get traction to just one? What am I missing?

It is. It won't engage until the other front wheel on that axle spins. But the way I see it, that other front wheel can only spin in unison with the rears as they're all locked together.

The center differential is only present on the manual transmission 4x4 model (since it's full-time 4 wheel drive), and it causes power to be distributed 50/50 between the front and rear axles. The ATRAC system senses wheel spin for the front and the rear axles independent of one another, so that the passenger side front wheel spinning causes the brake to be applied to that wheel and that wheel only. It would have no effect on the center differential or the rear axle. At least that's my understanding of it, but I'm no automotive engineer.
When it comes to those kinds of trails I would think the ARB air locker for the front might be handy too.
As for the warranty, The factory warranty (3yrs) you probably wont get much hassle on, it costs the dealer nothing to do work they are paid by the factory, however the extended warranty is through the dealer and you WILL have a hard time when it gets to that warranty and a modded vehicle. Honestly I would drop the extended warranty, they will credit it to the tail end of your loan and let it be. (im considering the same thing, no mods yet, but planning them.)
I don't know of any dealer that has to pay "out of pocket" for a customer's extended warranty claim. All authorized repairs are done under the approval of an outside administrator and the dealer is subsequently paid just as they are with the original factory warranty. "Extended warranties" are really just mechanical breakdown insurance.........just like your health insurance.
