This Weekend at Hatteras NC... Running in some very wet sand... OK.. In the Surf... at a good speed, I was loosing a little traction while in High FWD, and to be able to engage at that point without a complete stop would have helped...

I Agree its not very often you may need this, but ever once in a blue moon ya know'...
From what I've read up on and from talking to others, the issue with the locker on in 4H is that it can then also be on in 2H - along with VSC, which may cause some conflicts. 4H and 4L it's not an issue since VSC turns off automaticaly.. but if you were to have both on in 2H the VSC is going to freak when you turn because the rear wheels are turning at the same speed, it's going to assume you are skidding and take action to control it, which on a locked axle at speed may not be pretty. For it to work we'd need to make sure that when locked it turned off VSC.

On mine that just means 4WD is engauged, the auto's are part time 4wd. On yours, you are 4wd all the time, and the light indicates that your center diff is locked. They both have the same end result.

Re: Rear Locker + ATRAC

Hopefully there is NO difference with the 6MT version... Ill be doing this shortly!! Someone do it before me to make sure it works!

EDIT... This DID NOT WORK with my manual tranny FJ! Cutting the blue/yellow wire triggers the ABS, VSC OFF and SLIP indicator lights no matter where the Transfer case lever, and in addition, ATRAC would not work with the locker engaged. Thank the FJ gods that everything returned to normal uppon soldering the wire back together... I was so busy thinking of a what the heck Im going to tell Toyota, almoast had a heart attack.

Man do I feel like an idiot... my splice wasnt good... there was no signal to that wire at all, thus the warning lights.
Needless to say, I fixed it, (soldered to the black/orange instead of splice) and it works... oh, it works beautifully!!! (I USED it to TRY to climb an impossibly steep hill, and the locker locks, and the ATRAC works the front end at the same time. Genious.. pure genious.

OK, I dont have the rear locker but I like/want to have the A-trac. When I bought my FJ I ordered the a-trac button but I realized and by reading posts that A-trac wont work if you dont get rear locker even that the locker and the a-trac are 2 different system. So Im looking the schematics of the skid control ecu wondering how to make this possible...if tits possible.
I don't think the locker is required. The locker can only disable A-TRAC. So you should be good to go with the switch mod...

In terms that someone new to 4x4ing, can understand, what situations would you use this modification?

I rephrase: The week after I bought my FJ I ordered from Matt the a-trac button. When I got the button, I installed it but nothing happened; the myth is that if you dont get the the rear locker upgrade (DL) you cannot add a-trac. So, the deal is if by doing something like the atrac+rear locker wire-thing or so, may activate the atrac even when you dont have the rear locker upg. I am so frustated that I bought my FJ with everything but here in PR the FJs doesnt come w/a-trac unless having a manual tranny.

Re: Rear Locker + ATRAC

Hmmm. Now why does Toyota not allow them to be on together as stock? There has to be a reason...
