I'm thinking along these same lines. I'll wait a while (a long while) to see how this works out.

Of course, maybe that's what the big secret is for the SpecialMoabDesertRunnerHeritageBFGAllthatsBadazz Edition that is so highly anticipated. Ta Da! Atrac and Locker work together...add $3K!! What? At least you'll get a badge too. Lol...I can see Toyota engineers reading this thread and going...Doh! Now what?

And if you got a base model FJ with a locker you didn't have ATRAC, yet a simple button enabled that.. there had to be a reason for that too..

It may have been a simple as either marketing, or product liability. Realy in most cases you will never need this mod. If you can't get over an obstical using first ATRAC, and then with just the locker, you probably are on something that's harder than Toyota wanted the stock FJ to be used on or harder than your skill/vehical abilitys, and need to pick another line or rethink what you are doing. If it's hard enough that you actually need both the locker and the ATRAC on to get over it, you better know what you are doing, and its certain that you are in a situation that endangers damage to the vehical if you don't know what you are doing. 90%+ of FJ owners will never do this type of wheeling. The entire Rubicon was run in FJ's without it plenty of times. (and once with it.. ) But for those that do that type of wheeling, there are a few times this is going to be a godsend of a mod.. And it's way way way cheaper than a front ARB locker, and less stress on the front end.

Re: Rear Locker + ATRAC

I'm new enough to wheeling and don't get out to anything hard often enough to need this mod...but I will keep it in my archive for future reference. Hell, if you can have your cake and eat it too...why not? I'll be making it a point to get out a wheel tougher stuff...and this may come in handy a couple of years down the road.

Re: Rear Locker + ATRAC

Hey guys I think I discovered a side effect thats apparent in the dash photos... normally the ABS light comes on (I THINK) when you lock the locker. It doesnt anymore. The ABS light doesnt come on at all anymore except when you turn on the key and it runs the idiot light test.

I wouldnt be too worried about it though. I did try the Atrac and locker together and it DOES work, (off road) so im not sure what the ABS light NOT coming on means, but im sure its worth it!

(maybe the ABS isnt disabling itself when locker locks anymore, who knows)

ps. Keep in mind that the mod is totally reversable. Just reconnect the blue/yellow. (I tried this, and it IS reversable)

Re: Rear Locker + ATRAC

Go out and test the ABS under the following conditions

2wd No locker, no atrac
4low, locker, no atrac
4low, atrac only
4wd, no atrac, no locker
4low, no atrac, no locker

You should lose ABS in 4low under all conditions. It should be on under all non-4low conditions. If it comes on only in the conditions that it's supposed to come on in then it's all good. If it doesn't come on at all, or is on all the time...not good.

Correction, you should only loose ABS in 4low with the locker locked (at least on the AT). ABS is still on in 4 low without the locker. I think since ATRAC is on that is why it doesn't light the ABS light now, ATRAC takes over the ABS functions, in fact ATRAC's logic is the reverse of ABS..(ATRAC wants to lock a spining wheel, while ABS wants to unlock a non-spining wheel) But I do see that with ATRAC off, and only the rear locker on, that it may not disable ABS like it used to since this mod tells the VSC computer that the locker is off... But I don't think it will be an issue, just like with ATRAC not sensing the rear wheels because they are locked together and one tire isn't spining, it's not going to activate on one side of the locked axle because both tires are spinning at the same rate. It could activate on both rear wheels at the same time, but only if you were sliding with the rear wheels locked and the front tires moving, at which point it will modulate the rears not lock them (not a bad thing, it's not activating the brakes and locking them rather it's pulsing the brake and letting the tire turn a bit instead of lockup - hence anti-lock) Plus the fact that ABS doesn't kick in unless you are going faster than 5mph to begin with.

This all sounds reasonable...but a physical test may not be a bad idea...regardless of what the light is saying (or not saying). As for the 4low with ABS deal...I'll have to check...I thought the ABS light came on as soon as I switch to 4 low (I have an AT as well). Either way, I guess it doesn't matter. The point is that a physical verification that ABS works in the correct situations would be important. I don't care if they work or not in 4low but 4hi is very important...as well as 2wd.

Yes, ABS is on in 4hi and 2hi, and in 4low. It's now also on in 4low locked. Went outside and played in the dirt field.. 8-) It's always fun trying to get ABS to kick in, the FJ can brake pretty dang good with the 4 wheel disks.
