I was just watching the FJ trail team videos on the Toyota Web Site and a thought came to mind...
Has anyone come up with a snorkel kit for the FJ? Some of these FJ's were going through some really deep water.

The FJ's actually have a really good water fording set up on them, but I'm sure Safari Snorkels is on it already, but theres alot that goes into making a snorkel so I suspect it will be a little wile before they have one.
I talked ot hte folks at ARB and they said that the engineering team in AU is looking at building one. They did not have any availability dates. If I had to guess I would say next year sometime.
ARB in Melbourne Australia have imported an FJC for more developement work, and since Safari is just around the corner from ARB, you can guarantee that they will be doing a snorkel pretty soon.
There have been some good discussions about re-locating the breathers as a quick enhancement to the FJ for water crossing on some of the other forums. I won't post the link here but a quick search on snorkel will get you that info if it isn't also posted here somewhere.
I've heard that snorkels are functional, but mainly for looks and really not needed. they almost become dust collectors?
Only really needed if you are crossing rivers and streams that might be more than 2 feet deep.
Gasoline engines cope better than diesels when a bit of water gets sucked in, so a $400 snorkel on a diesel can save you thousands on engine rebuilds! Most Australian 4wds/suvs are diesel, hence the popularity of snorkels.

If you are behind another vehicle on a really dusty trail, you will apprecaite a snorkle. It gets your air intake up and out of the dust thrown off by vehicles in front of you so your air filter will not become so clogged with dirt. If they were not needed, I am sure they wouldn't use them on the Camel Trophy vehicles.

Snorkels are quite functional, if you notice on trails or viewing videos there is a intense dust and dirt cloud from under the front wheels. That is where your air intake is located. Makes sense to move the intake higher out of the immediate cloud of dust. I agree that cutting a hole in your fender is a real commitment to the extreme modifications. If you are not gonna run it in a mud pit, dusty trail or rock crawlin then the snorkel is useless. If you are gonna run it off road then it is a worthwhile modification.
