Sway Bar Removal

How much more articulation does removing the front sway bar afford us with the FJC? Has anyone taken any measurements? Any ramp numbers or boulder testing? Pics?

Cheers!

Talking Re: Sway Bar Removal

Hell, Im just hinking to take it off perm...never had one on any of my 4x4's. Just had to tke the time to get used to the "sway"! I know someone was looking into a quick disconnect kit, but havent found one that worked properly (except on the Mog).
Looking for real world testing if any!

Re: Sway Bar Removal

If it's anything like the 4Runner (which it is) it helps a ton to have it off. I take it off and throw it in the back when I go offroading. Never ramped it though. Be sure and be careful with the CV's though, that extra articulation comes at a price of... more articulation!

And yeah, no good way to make a disconnect, so that sucks.

Re: Sway Bar Removal

Quick disconnects are only half the issue. It sits under the stock skid plate (not the silver accessory one, the regular one) and needs to be removed to get the sway bar out of there.

We are in the process of making a set.
The issue is keeping the sway bar in the same or higher position when it is removed.
MyFJ purchased some warrior Jeep 4" disconnects that can be easily modified to fit the FJ- but you will need to go to the hardware store to get bolts that will fit the bushings- or buy some daystars with the same ID as the bolt that you use to fit the pin ends.
We are going to make soemthig in the next 30 days( I thought that we would have it done already but other things came up on the modification) before our trip to Tellico.
The bump stops can slo be trimmed( as we plan to do ) unfortunatly with IFS- the CV cannot be imited to you have to take 'er easy on max droop with obsticles in front of you but it shoulndt be a big deal...
Once we have the prototype built, I will post up pics and instruction or can sell them if you all are interested.

Re: Sway Bar Removal

Would a compromise set-up make sense?

Pitch the tiny rear bar, and install a smaller diameter front bar (assuming someone would fab this). Like some others, I didn't have sway bars on my previous 4x4, but it had solid axles front and rear. I could certainly live with the additional body roll on the FJ. Losing the rear bar would improve rear traction, and using a lighter front bar would improve front traction a bit while not allow excessive articulation to destroy CV joints.

** Don't take out you rear sway bars!!! **

Taking them out won't improve much, and all it will do is have you unseat your rear coils. Trust me, us 4Runner guys have tried doing the rear disconnects and they don't help anything.

Re: Sway Bar Removal

4RnrJ is right on the money.

The need to remove the rear swaybar is not that urgent as compared to the front. The problem with the rear is that even with the swaybar off you will not see a significant improvement worthy of having it off permanently.

If anyone is capable of developing a bolt on front swaybar removal system will make mula since it's cross platform for many other vehicles. I've experimented with some ideas but none worked due to the location of the endlinks. I'm all for it if anyone can make em.

Good luck
