Ok, it seems that everyone is an expert on which lift or front bumper to get, now I've got a real technical question. Has anyone had the CV axles apart yet? I've blown out an outer boot and I'm not familiar with Toyota drivetrain. Does the axle come apart at the inner joint or the outer? Does it have c-clips or is it beaten out of the shaft? Thanks.
Usually toyota axles pop out of the front diff just by pulling on them.
You will have to remove the large center hub nut (24MM?) then the outer will slip out of the spindle.
How did this happen? Please explain what you were doing when you broke a boot? What lift do you have? (Im sure you have a lift, or else it wouldnt have ripped!!)
It's not for the fj in particular but it's the same as I did it to my 4runner (4th gen) not to long ago. (same axle as yours) Since your outers are bad, I recommend you remove the inners completely and swap the boots because taking apart the outers is very difficult. the clip on the outer side is so hard to get that the only way I know is to beat the crap out of it. Rather than damaging anything, I remove the inner and then replace the outer boot and then reassemble the inners and then reinstall the entire front axle.
the entire job should take be relatively easy with tools but do expect to get dirty
Thanks for your help, thats exactly what I needed. I've got a Daystar lift on mine. I did a few jumps where I got all four wheels off the ground and climbed up a three foot high tree stump. I heard a pop and the end result is a damaged outer sway bar end link and a torn boot. Total Chaos or Camburg needs to come out with a long travel kit for these with the 300M axles.
Interesting... How did that stuff get damaged if its a daystar? How did the suspension flex past the designed limit?
(daystar being a preload spacer, and not a topload spacer)
When you climbed the tree stump, did the wheel that was HANGING rip the boot? Or the wheel that climbed the stump? And is this the moment the boot ripped?
Well it seems that there are only TWO dealers in the whole country that show the CV axle boot kit, one in Whittier, Ca, and one in Columbus, Oh. The parts guy told me they should have some in a week or so by then my axle will be toast. Time to take the lift off and take it to the dealer!
Both Total Chaos and Camburg have Long Travel kits for the FJ. Just get the 05 Tacoma one as it's the same. I'm currently running the TC kit on my 4th gen 4runner. I highly recommend the TC kit.
Well make that two CV axle boot kits total in the USA, none of those two are for sale and are reserved for customers. I just got a call and it will be atleast a week until the parts are in. Since I've got a lift (2.5" Daystar, otherwise totally factory) they told me they can't give me a rental car ( I've got 5,021 miles on the FJ).
Do a little more research. I suspect the CV boots are the same for numerous yota's. I recently purchased a boot kit from toyata dealer for $35. Came with the inner and outer boot and two grease packs. It was for an 03 Taco, but it contained the newer version of the inner boot that allows a greater angle. You'll have to remove the inner to get the outer off.
Talk to Evan @ Northridge Toyota Parts (888) 381-0623. He'll locate the boot for ya.
Part number: 04427-60080 (For FJ Cruiser)
Availability: None available at the factory. 27 in transit. 24 heading to Ontario. ETA unknown
Part number: 04428-04010 (For 2005+ Tacoma)
Availability: In stock ready to ship from factory.
I am under the impression that the tacoma boot kit will work since the front axles are the same. No guarantees but that's my rational. Evan is unable to verify whether or not the kits are the same but the price is the same for both kits. If you want to try the 2005+ Tacoma boot kit give him a call and he'll get the kit out to ya asap.
