I'm tentatively planning a trip to Moab next Spring and was hoping some of the veterans could offer some advice/guidance/tips on what to expect, what to do, who to talk to, etc..
If you've been there, let me know how your experience was.
I'm a novice to serious wheeling but don't plan on doing anything crazy anyway. I'm really going to see some nice country, take some pictures, get away from the city, maybe camp a bit..that sort of thing. I'm sure I can find some place closer to Austin to do that, but we're kind of set on Moab after seeing some photo galleries.
Moab cannot be compared to anywhere else on earth ! The scenery is breathtakingly unbelievable. Many trails from light to killer you can pick. There is a 4x4 repair/rental shop right on the main drag. Most in there are experienced wheelers just talk to them, they will hopefully direct you to the right trails. Check for the Jeep Safari site, they have an open run in the spring, that would be a good way to get started. Also TLCA has a run in the spring called "Cruise Moab". All Toyota, all trails again light to difficult. Great bunch of folks. Joining their organization will give you a quarterly magazine that will keep you up to date on most all Toyota specific get togethers. Hope this helps.
Make sure to give "Lions Back" a try, it's a nice easy trail to start on!
*** Just Kidding, do not follow my horrible advice above ***
Actually I did Lionsback in every rental I took up there. New automatic 4x4 with new tires and power steering make it easy. Now I look back and realize it was foolish, but what a rush. Oh to be young again.

Lions back isn't a difficult run at all as far as pure offroading challenge goes, it is just scary as hell. Even if it was completely flat on top with line markings and everything like that, it would be freakin scary.

The only things about Lion's Back that would scare me would be the ascent, the top, and the descent... other than that...no prob!
Moab in general is BEAUTIFUL...there is a wide variety of trails... Arches is great...the TTORA group is a great bunch of folks to go with (October run) they know what they're doing, and will give you great information! I can't wait to be out there again!
P.S.. If you have a wide angle lens for whatever camera...this is the place to use it!
