so I wanted to get some opinions on a good way to set up some lights. I like the two on the front bumper but are those really that effective? Ive looked at light bars as well but my issue with this is Im an avid whitewater kayaker and I have boats on my roof a lot. also any preference between driving lights and fog lights? Ive done a search and didnt find much so I just thought Id post. also Id like to keep the price somewhere reasonable...thanks!

Vision X LED is what you want. They are worth every single penny. I use them daily and they are incredible. Every time I turn them on I say WOW! Seriously, I really do. They will blow your mind. I will elaborate with pics, or you can check out any of the numerous threads I've posted pics in. But I'll post them here too. I'm hungry, so I'm going to eat something. Then I'll show you the supreme awesomeness that is, Vision X. They ought to pay me for as much as I talk about their lights.
The most versatile light on the market would be Lightforce's 170 in a halogen or HID bulb with it parabolic reflector and removable filters. The halogen model runs about $220 for 2 and filters are about $20.

I need them for every day (or night I guess) use, I go to school in the Appalachian mountains and I just need MORE light on those tight mountain roads. I also do alot of driving on the forest service roads and most of my offroading is on old logging roads....so in general I just want a wider beam for seeing into corners and off to the side. ill read up on that "lights and their usage" thread

X2 on the lightforce, but it depends on what you consider reasonably priced. I'm running 2 of there HID's on the front bumper and 5 of the 170's on the roof. with the 2 HID's on I can't tell if the roof lights are on.

Adding lights to the top of the bumper helps a lot offroad. Remember they are not fog or driving lights (well.. depending on state laws).
Roof rack lights are okay with shorter recreational kayaks (< 12ft) as long as you strap them down on their sides. Use stackers or J style carriers. Longer kayaks might work too if you mount them more to the rear. Or you can use lower rectangular type lights to make them a lower profile.

I don't think you can use any of these lights legally on the road. But, on those mountain trails you will be okay. I have the Hella 4000 cornering lights on the front of my FJ... perfect for what you are looking for. You get great side coverage and more distance. Exactly what I needed.
My personal vote in Visionx Xmitter line or equivalent.
I have a 32" Xmitter bar on my roof rack and 2 7" HID lights on my bumper. When I have the Xmitter LED bar on you can't even notice the HID lights when you flick them on and off.
In the end I will likely replace my HID's with VisionX LEDs on the bumper.
The OEM Lights on the bumper are just driving lights (good ones mind you - Hella's) but they would be better roof mounted for offroad use - I converted my OEm bumper mounted lights (changed the lens) to Hella 500 Fogs (nice wide beam dispersion) and they are great for the hilly, country roads I navigate every weekend...I'd defer to the experts with regards roof lights... seems like the LED's are awesome but expensive!!!!
