My sense would be to do just that. The Devil's playground/soda lake area isn't all that scenic and makes the 2 day run fun and do-able with a third "day" getting to the Colorado River end. Run the trail East to West. The 5 hours quoted is about right. Tack on another 2 hours for rubber-necking and exploring and it's not a taxing day.
I'm packing for a "crisis" trip to Italy tomorrow for work and the phone is ringing off the hook from my boss -- cell died with constant use -- so I don't have time to scan the map and all, but will do that and will annotate it when I get back in a week and will post it here.
