Did the dealer say why it wasn't covered under warranty? I was at my dealer today and expressed concern about the differential on my FJ. He said it is covered under the 5 year/60k powertrain warranty.
Sorry to hear about yours breaking.
So, from what I've been told, Gulf State Toyota dealerships don't like to do warranty work. They say "no" to as much as they can. South East Toyota dealerships seem to be a little more lenient. The dealership (Serra Toyota in Birmingham, AL) just told me that it wasn't covered because I was at Grey Rock and I had "all kinds of after-market parts". They wouldn't give me a reason in writing and gave me the run around until I finally gave up. I was kind of screwed because I was 650 miles from home. Looking back on the whole situation, I would have just towed it home and figured something out. It was an expensive lesson to learn.

I'm waiting on some more stats from this thread and seeing if I can find out anything more from the "bad batch of gears" rumor and then I'll try contacting Toyota corporate. I guess the dealerships work under smaller umbrellas based off of region. The Toyota Customer Experience Line only contacted the dealership to contact me... blah, blah, more run around.
