October Trip

Greetings from Texas!

I'm looking for some advice. I'm taking a honeymoon road trip from Austin Texas to Las Vegas in mid October. We'll be in Vegas for 3 or 4 days and then have about 10 days to play around. Originally, we planned on going to Moab for a couple of days, and then head to Colorado for the Ouray/Silverton area. A friend of mine says we should avoid that area of Colorado in October because of the weather (snow storms and closed roads etc). We'll be going solo on this trip (we'll be together of course, but we won't have another vehicle traveling with us). My 4x4 experience is limited and we have a stock FJ. Obviously, we don't want to get stranded and ruin our trip. Our alternate plans are to explore Arizona and New Mexico and then head back to Austin. We would make another trip in the summer for Colorado.

So am I being paranoid? I don't know the area well at all. What do you think?
