Hood is needed to match the new higher fender line. If you didn't install the fiberglass hood you would have about an 1" gap from top of hood to top of fender.

The "Bedsides" are actually "rear fenders" and you are correct they are installed over the existing fenders as you are right again with the rear being structurally important. Todd used dzus fasteners to attach the fiberglass rear fenders over the stock fenders.
