It's a tough call on the stick-out-ness. Right now, they are easy to hop up on for roof-rack checking and for use in ingress/egress. An inch in, they would be a bit more like toe holds. However, it would save the back of your pants a bit... Compromises. As far as looks go, I think they look great with this level of pop-out...

For the coating, I only specified a powder coat and this is what came. I like the gloss though, so no regrets.
