Found out about this over at the Expedition Portal. It's quite an amazing device!
Home - SPOT Satellite Messenger
It's similar to a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), but WAY less expensive & it can be used for more than just emergencies. It's GPS enabled, and uses satellite comm to send messages to up to 10 e-mail addresses from virtually anywhere.
There are tons of uses for this! Obviously, you can use it to let your family know you're OK if you're in the backcountry somewhere. I'm thinking it would be a great device for the Summit for each trail leader to help keep track of group positions. I'm also going to look into this for the 2008 "Run Around The Rockies" as a way for rally drivers to report when they reach waypoints.
Really cool!
