We took our time on the trail just enjoying the experience. The FJ handled superbly. Nothing dramatic, everything was very well controlled.
There was quite a bit more snow then I've anticipated. Really a good mix of terrain. It was muddy, slushy, and rocky. There were multiple big mud puddles that you have to cross through. Those conditions made steep descents quite interesting.
Felonious' rig looks awesome. Love the FF bumper.
Towards the end we were attempting a pretty harsh area where the ground was just cut up really bad. You are lucky to have 2 wheels on the ground at one time. While attempting to make the ascent, I hear a pop on the driver rear. Didn't think much of it until we drove around a little more and stopped to check on a side trail. Then I noticed the shock is leaning against the tire! Wth... The shaft and the top nut had sheared off from the mount. Matter of fact, the sheared off portion now sits on the frame rail. While trying to pick it up, I think I pushed it in and it just dropped. I have no idea where it is now. Probably on top of the gas tank or something. Felonious had some parachute cords and we just tied the shock to the frame so it won't bounce around.
We drove slowly and uneventfully down to the trail head where we aired back up.
Driving home was a bit noisy due to the broken shock, but the ride was ok. I guess it's time to send it back to All Pro and have it reserviced. The thing is we were never bouncing or going very fast on the trail. The shock broke while on a very slow maneuver. Even the ascent was slow and deliberate. No bouncing, spinning, or anything abusive. Very surprised that they broke like that.
Despite the repair (20 min), the trip was wonderful. Great to get away and get some wheel time. Thanks for coming along Jeff. It was great wheeling with you!
