I'm not a chemist either, but I think if CO2 were a problem, we'd know about it by now.
I do know that for my AF Reserve Job, we use CO2 to inflate the life rafts and life preservers on all of our aircraft. I highly doubt the military would use that much CO2 if it were a bad thing. Of course, this is the military we're talking about.
I went with CO2 for the speed and convenience issue, not to mention cost. We were able to put together a very good CO2 system for about half what a decent on board air system would've run us.
