As mentioned, you need a native american guide to take you far back into Canyon de Chelly.

You can drive around in Monument Valley on several of the dirt roads without any guide whatsoever, though there's an admission fee to the park itself.

Sunset Crater and the Cinders OHV area are both popular for 4wds....they are both near Flagstaff.

In Sedona there are a myriad of scenic trails. None are considered hard....the hardest of the bunch is Broken Arrow and it's actually very easy. Soldier's Pass, Greasy Spoon and several other trails are up in this area.

I need to get up and run Broken Arrow at some point myself....just haven't made it yet.
