Mount Baldy snowshoe fun 1-26-08 SoCal

Traffic going up the mountain road was at a complete standstill due to an accident. I lost at least 1 hour there so had a very late start (9:30am)

Started at Manker Flats/San Antonio Falls road (6k' alt.) and then up towards the old warming hut at 8k'. The top is 10k' but I knew there wouldn't be time to get there with more storms coming in. Even though others had started before me the snow was very soft and my snowshoes sunk in quite a bit.

After a slow slog up I made it to the hut. Some others that I passed made it up and we passed cameras around. Here are a couple

Looking downhill

Temp was 32 deg F with winds gusting to 20mph. There were clouds building up at the top of Baldy so I headed back down.

Looking back up from the trail and the peak is obscured by clouds

Looking out under the clouds you could easily make out Catalina Island and some drilling platforms

Made it back down to the truck in good time (3PM) and got home for a hot shower, meal and a good sleep...
