First of all you need to but the "Big Bear Lake Back Country Trail Map" you can get it at 4wheel parts or you can also purchase it at the discovery center in Big Bear Lake....its $3.00...and it is ESSENTIAL!! or go online and its like $6.00 here....
San Gorgonio Wilderness Association Backcountry Store
What I would reccomend is if you are driving up the 18 turn off at Green Valley to your left(signs everywhere) and that will start you at the bottom of "3N16"....you can take that all the way up to "2N09" and that drops you right by the lake and discovery center. It will take 2-3 hours depending on stops and how many times you get distracted on other trails.
3N16 is like the main trail out there and we usually pretty much stick to that route and just take side trails to explore but always end up back on 3N16. DO NOT go on 3N10(John Bull Trail), it is a grade 5 trail and your stock FJ will not make it(mine didn't...lol)
The best thing about that trail map is it lists the difficulty of all the trails and also has little scenic spots listed. The route I gave you is good as well because there is a spot to air down off green valley and 2N09 turns into a paved road at the end and is a good spot to air back up.
