I have a question about border crossings.

Since i havn't been to the states since, oh about the age of 16, I've let my passport expire and no longer have one. I've been reading a bunch of stuff online but certain sites are contradicting each other. do you now need (as of jan 31st 2008) a passport to drive across the border? or is it just for Air and sea travel? Is a combo of Drivers liscence and Birth certificate enough? or will i absolutely need a passport?

Also, I couldn't find the details on what i can bring across the border in the way of alcohol. I know i can bring 2 cartons of cigarettes across, but that's about all i know. Is it something along the lines of 2 cases of beer? or can you bring a flat (24 cans)?not sure, and am scratching my head about it.
