Yep -- you have it right. The need for an even more secure form of ID is 18 months out from January 31, 2008. It is still in debate in 18 months if that will be a passport or a more secure version of a drivers license.
I crossed from Windsor to Detroit to catch a flight to Las Vegas for new years and noticed they ask a few more questions than they did a year ago:
a) They now ask if you have even been finger printed.
b) They ask if you have ever been refused entry to the US.
c) They ask if you have ever been convicted of a crime.
d) They ask of you have more than $10,000 in cash.
All the rest of the questions were standard.
a) What to you do for a living
b) When will you be returning to Canada
c) Have any cigarettes of alcohol
