You are right, We even think it is a broken system and it needs change..
The fact is that Toyota is doing a test market in Canada right now and for the next 5 years (1 yr into it already) They have made every Toyota in Canada one price just like Scion is here in the US, it's called "Pure Pricing"
This means that the sticker price is what you pay and then you add any extra's you want and that you get to choose.. . Toyota feels the same way as you do that the whole negoaiting for a car is the wrong way to have high customer service and expect customers to be happy with their purchase.
So they are working on it.. The problem is that the law isn't on their side and unless every dealer in the US (Toyota dealers) agree to doing it this way we can't do it.. The Laws prohibit price fixing unless every Toyota dealership is the same price, Like Saturn and Scion.
Now the way I do business in the Internet (as the internet manager at my store) is that I give one set price for each model of the car, there are a lot of models so the price does vary for Camry's (as there are 8 different models of the Camry) but it is the same for every customer no matter what.. The only problem is that the other dealers around don't do it, so in order to get the business and be competitive I still have to negoaite.. But I try to do it the right way first and then when I can't I have to play the same game as every one else OR I don't sell cars and I can't afford the Toys for my FJ....
So in your experience, You just got a ****ty dealership, there are good guys out there which don't play games, they expect you to pay a little more, but you get the customer service to go with it and that is what it's all about.. You are spending a lot, (average Toyota has an Invoice of about 28K now) and that comes with a lot of responsiblty from us to make sure you get the best in customer service for the money you are spending..
So stop looking for the lowest deal and start looking at who will treat you the way you want to be treated, as everything has a price and Good Customer service is one of those things. You do get what you pay for..
If all you care about is getting the lowest deal and beating the dealership up for it then (unfourtuntly) you don't always get the best in customer service, Not that I agree with it, I still think you deserve to be treated right.. But I am only one person and there are a lot of dealers out there...
My advise is to look for the dealer which will take care of you, pay a little more for that service and be happy with it.. Price isn't everything in this world, as you are finding out...
Hope this helps.. PM me if you want to talk..

BamBam and 007FJ both make great points. I'm in the process of trying to purchase a new FJSE. What a pain in my a$$. My trade in is what's killing me. I have a fully loaded 06 Tacoma Access Cab TRD Off-Road that I owe $23000 on, and dealers won't give me more then $19000, but have them on their lot for $26000 to $27000. The average truck just like mine in a 300 mile range goes for $26000. My truck as an Alpine DVD system, two way alarm system with remote start, back up camera, and a couple of TRD goodies.
I'm all for people making money, but I not for being screwed either. Give me a fair trade in value and a fair price on the FJ, and we'll be happy. 007FJ seems to be pretty fair. I have been emailing him about my progress on this purchase and he has been real helpful. I have even considered driving 12 hours to purchase the FJ from him. I just don't know how the out of state purchase thing would work since I'm in California. I could do it in a weekend.
