Last weekend my wife and I drove over to The Smokies to see the elk. They are in the Catallochee Valley. Take exit 20 off I40 (Cove Creek). You can then drive on the Mount Sterling Road and cross I40 (exit 7) and take Cold Springs Creek Road to Max Patch. These are National Park Service and US Forest Service Roads. They are dirt roads and offer great vistas and insight tio Southern Appalachia at its best. They may not be the off road experience that some want but take along a camera and enjoy.
