If you just want to go with the resistor you need to just add a resistor in line with the LED that is approximately the same resistance as the stock bulb. In the stock set up the bulb is a part of the flasher circuit, if you increase the resistance you will slow the flashing and if you decrease the resistance (ie. change to LED) you will increase the flashing speed.
