I like the 48" extreme. I am lifted and i have no problems using it to do exactly what you are referring to, lifting to place on jack stands. Make sure when you use it on your rails (which appear to be the only mounting position for you if you do not have aftermarket steel bumpers), you only lift between the support braces of the rails. I would also suggest having the door open when you use the hi-lift in that spot.
Practicing using it in my drive way has really helped me understand how it operates, and how to use it effectively.
Some people have lifted the FJ from the trailer hitch. I would not advise you to do this to place it on jack stands or on the trail. If you lifted it from there it is in a very unstable position, even with the front wheels chocked.
