I own rural land in two different states (neither of which is Virginia FWIW). In Texas, you can do pretty much whatever you damn well please with your own rural land. Zoning is mostly a city limits kind of thing here, so you don't need any special permit or permission for agricultural, commercial, residential, or any other kind of use.
At my other place in New Mexico, the county is trying to pass county-wide zoning restrictions on some aspects of new home building, but otherwise again you can use your own land in any way you see fit. There is an ad hoc "neighborhood" association that is trying to shut down a commercial gravel quarry on BLM land in the same mountain range where I am, but they are not having much success because they have no legal basis that I can discern.
As long as you're not in any city limits, you are probably good to go but I would call your county government office and ask just to make sure.
