My spacer* is 2 inches. But I think it's a little longer than it needs to be. could probably go 1.5 with no problem. Shorter is better as the longer the spacer the more leverage the clamps have to work against. The part of the stud that sticks out from the clamp is just about 3.5 inches (probably 4" total).
*A sophisticated combination of Gorilla Tape wrapped around the threaded stud with a 2" aluminum pipe section crimped around the tape. I need to find some brake line or something to that effect to replace the tape.
