The morels in the photos are the typical black morel found in northern lower michigan. They are Morchella angusticeps to be exact. Most folks are familiar with the common white or yellow morels, Morchella esculenta. The blacks can be found in the same places as the whites, but they usually come out first. Obviously the black morels are harder to hunt due to their superb camo. The blacks generally have a stronger smokey/earthy flavor.
Hindsight, good to hear you like the hobby too. I really encourage you to branch out and learn about other edibles. There are a large number of common edibles that have NO look alikes at all. The variety of textures and flavors rival those of fruit and vegetables. Have fun out there!
