The computer technology used with today's engines is able to compensate for the various octanes that are available.

BUT....

You may not be saving any money. My 06 GTO requires premium and if I run 87 or 89, the loss of mpg more than offsets the amount saved from premium.

If an engine is tuned to be able to use the higher octane, it will get better mileage with the higher grade fuels. This is why the new sticker says "tested using premium fuel".

You might want to do some testing and see if you really are saving money or not.

With a mpg difference of 2mpg you will be ahead finacially by using premium.
