i had a k&n in my previous car, a VW Jetta with a V-6.... I know other guys have mentioned it before, but you have to keep up the cleanings.... I found it really hard to tell my filter was dirty by visual inspection, so I didn't clean it... needless to say, the car had some issues... poor gas mileage, restricted flow, which in turn turned to dirty flow, which burned up 2 oxygen sensors and my catalytic converter... if it looks clean, it might be, but i'd clean it every oil change... for me after my previous experience, it's not worth it, especially in the dusty environments... paper filters for me for a while at least until i forget my k&n issues
