All Pro / Walker Evans

Need your Help... This is for your information. This is happening. I was wondering If there is a simple solution that can be adapted. A strap to limit down travel or something. I'll leave this up to you experts. We don't like to see broken ALL PRO rigs. I learned the hard way what that clunking was.
That might be whats happening in the rear too. Thanks... You guys are the greatest.

Terry.. that's a broken sway bar link that cut my CV Boot.

RED ART INC. : Racing Seats, SuperStraps, TieDowns, & Window Nets and go to the Limit Strap section.

What would you attach the limiting strap to? The Sway bar and fab something up by the shock mount to limit that popping that causes the problem? I actually went out to my rig and looked and am perplexed a bit on the whole mounting concept. It has to be on a VERY RIGID upper mount or it will rip out and can't conflict with other suspension motion that goes on during trail running.

Re: All Pro / Walker Evans

it would have to be from the frame to the lower a arm. thats the way ive seen it done so many times. but i dont know if that would be the best way for our application

RedArt (Beard) offers mounting points as well for these. With a washer you could mount to almost any solid point as long as you know the max length before you want it to actually limit.

The Total Chaos LT kit has the limit strap attach from the inside of the secondary shock mount on the bottom to a clip that is welded on about 1" towards the back of the vehicle from the shock tower and about half an inch down from the top of the frame rail. I think. The picture is not perfect.

Re: All Pro / Walker Evans

Oh, and the limit strap upper mount does not actually have to be that strong as it comes into play only about 1/4" from the max travel of the arm.

What happens with the slack? That may be a silly, naive question, but when it's in full compression you'd be talking considerable slack (or am I missing something?).

I run DR's and some of the problems have been with other suspension systems - I haven't HEARD of this problem with a rig running DR's and discussed similar problems at the DR factory - and they didn't have that problem racing their suspension. But it doesn't mean that it won't happen to a DR eqpt. FJ either.

Re: All Pro / Walker Evans

Somehow I don't think a strap is the solution. How does the bolt for the sway bar look? Would a stronger bolt have prevented this from happening?

Re: All Pro / Walker Evans

well, im gonna probably be going to my friends shop tomorrow to weld up some angle iron on the end links to beef them up a little. maybe that will help. or maybe its a temporary solution to a permanent problem...

The bolt is hardened steel. The problem deals with the way the suspension handles full extension on rocks and the "popping" that comes with difficult terrain - I think (I'm no expert here - I was just there with Brent). I don't think that the strap is the ideal solution. That bolt takes some real abuse on rock crawling and the solution might be having a spare bolt, boot and front-end lower suspension parts along for just such a situation. When the bolt goes, the sway bar rips the boot. It's not the kind of repair I'd want to be stuck with, but if you're in the out-back there's not much choice. DUSTPARK was actually lucky that it gave way on the smooth pavement. If it had been back in the rocks, the swaybar would have chewed up the tire's inner sidewall.

DUSTPARK, FJROD and I are all running WE's and 305's and they're HEAVY (and very robust for rocking and difficult terrain). Keeping that heavy tire/rim in alignment-true is one of the reasons I'm having Jason put the DR UCA's on the FJ Wednesday (and Light Racing Jounce Shocks for those sudden drops).
