what are you doing this weekend

Looks like Friday night is Table Mesa with Kurt, anyone else have plans for Saturday or Sunday?

I got the whole weekend off and I'd love to spend it in the FJ. Not looking to do any rock crawling, but any easy to moderate trails would be nice.

Was up in Prescott last week for work and went to Bannie Mine Road on my lunch. Didn't realize how tight the trail was - got the FJ all kinds of new pin striping. It'll buff out, right!

Anyway...I don't have any trails planned, but I can look at my books if no one else has any ideas.

Re: what are you doing this weekend

I'll look at my books tonight and see if I can't find something for sat and sunday - anyone prefer a certain area over another?

The bradshaw mountain run is pretty fun - get off 17 at bumble bee, go through cleator and have a drink, stop in crown king for lunch, take senator highway, then back to i-17 via bloody basin. its not really much of a challenge though, just a dirt road really. in fact, i've seen cars driving it before, but the views are awesome, there should be snow at the top with some mud. its about 70 miles of dirt though, so its a full day trip.

I've also wanted to do box canyon (i think thats the one) and connect to buckhorn creek trail, and then connect to castle hot springs road, making that a full days worth, but again, thats not very challenging, at least not by what the books say.

I'd be game for doing some more difficult if possible, but if people are into easy, I can do easy.

Kurt, I don't care about a late night, I'm game! As long as I can feed the dogs before I head out, they should be fine at home. I like exploring. Maybe we can find a use for your winch too!?!

Re: what are you doing this weekend

Speedy mentioned maybe heading north to sedona and hitting broken arrow which sounds like a blast. Anyone else into that? I know sedona fest just happened, but I totally missed it. There's a bunch of other stuff we could probably play around on up there too.

Re: what are you doing this weekend

If you want easy but with some nice minor challenges then I can recommend some areas in the Flagstaff area such as Anderson Mesa. There are a lot of fire roads with some nice sight seeing. I am sure we will run into some elk and I know some good area for a camp fire. Flag might have some snow still.

Cheers,

P.S. Still need the recipe for those Margaritas!

Re: what are you doing this weekend

Speedy, I didn't see anything about Anderson Mesa in any of my books, but maybe its called something else. I'm open to anything though, it'd just be cool to have a little group. Here are some of my ideas thought

idea 1: Flagstaff - head north to FLG, head up 89 and hit Cinders OHV area. The trail in the book says thats about 3 hours. Have a snack on the trail. After Cinders head north again to Schultz Pass - an easy trail, mountain views. Then back to FLG to hit a brewery for dinner, then back home.

idea 2: Sedona - head north to sedona and then 89a over to Greasy Spoon - it says in my book that its difficult and not to try it on a rainy day. I doubt we'll have a problem though. Connected to Greasy Spoon is Van Deren Cabin road. Total trip should be 3-4 hours. Then back to Sedona for lunch. Then we can hit Broken Arrow and finish with schnebly hill road, taking us back to 17, where we head south to phx.

idea 3: Bradshaw Mountains - an easy long trail. I-17 north to Bumble Bee exit 248, take trail pass Bumble Bee, then to Cleator, stop for a drink, then further up the mountain to Crown King, stop for lunch. From there take Senator highway north to the Goodwin Townsite and then head east to Mayer and back to I-17. Total trip is over 70 miles of dirt, and I'd guess takes about 4-5 hours, maybe longer with the stops.

idea 4: Wickenburg Area - head NW to Wickenburg, then up 89 to the Stanton Ghost Town Trail which will take roughly 2 hours and connects to Rincon Road which connects to Box Canyon of the Hassayampa Trail. We take box canyon, 1 hour or so, around and out to us-93 and then down to Buckhorn Creek Trail, easy, 2 hours, which connects to Castle Hot springs road, which connects to 74.

idea 5: martinez cabin, not canyon- moderate run, book says 5-6 hours, nice views, south east phx area. Never been there but looks interesting.

idea 6: coke ovens - moderate trail. steep climbs, tipy shelf roads, challenging rock obstacles, skid plates recommended along with high ground clearance and good articulation. book says 6-7 hours

idea 7: el oso road and edwards park trail - go north on 87 to el oso road, a scenic easy trail with views of the tonto basin and the four peaks wilderness area. edwards park trail is connected to el oso road and is rated a 6, so it'd step things up a bit, but may make for a long day.

I dunno, those were some of the things I noticed in the books that looked interesting. We could definitely make things shorter, with less side trips and whatnot if we don't want to spend a full day wheeling.

Honestly though, I'd love to spend friday night wheeling at table mesa, then spend all day saturday and sunday wheeling too. so if you can't make one day and can make another thats fine, I'm open to anything. If its just a couple of people without the proper recovery gear, I say we should stick to the easier trails so we don't do something we shouldn't.

I'm gonna post this on a couple of other sites too, I hope thats ok.

Re: what are you doing this weekend

Hi All,
I have been watching this and am curious as to the trails you all decided on. I have plans on being in AZ this weekend and would like to join up if things work out, for a Sat or Sun run.

Regards, SSC
