My wife and I are really looking forward to our first big AZ trip. From Feb. 16-23, school is out for our 8 and 6 year-olds. So here I am ... a blank slate dying for advice from you gurus.
My best early memories are from our trips to meteor crater, indian ruins and certain large canyons. I don't know ANY of the trails. We were gonna stay in Sedona, do the African wildlife park, Grand canyon of course, Meteor Crater, Wupatki etc... basically stuff around the Flagstaff part of the state. Take Route 66 (40) East from Orange County, then Jerome on the way back west.
Wheeling-wise, I am not an axle-breaking type. But I'll do it if it means getting somewhere. The kids love "destination" wheeling; ghost towns, mines etc. And we were hoping to get in some fossil digging if that's still possible.
Wowsers!
You will have a great time, good time to be here.
You will soon be buried in helpful hints and over eager desire for new blood from our clan.
I'll keep an eye on this thread.
Welcome to my native state...

I'd like to suggest visiting Monument Valley or Canyon de Chelly. Both about 4 hrs drive from Sedona. For Monument Valley, you can stay in Kayenta or come back to Flagstaff. For Canyon de Chelly, you can stay overnight in Chinle.

Three Sisters, MV

At Canyon de Chelly, you can drive on the canyon bottom when accompanied by a Navajo guide.
As mentioned, you need a native american guide to take you far back into Canyon de Chelly.
You can drive around in Monument Valley on several of the dirt roads without any guide whatsoever, though there's an admission fee to the park itself.
Sunset Crater and the Cinders OHV area are both popular for 4wds....they are both near Flagstaff.
In Sedona there are a myriad of scenic trails. None are considered hard....the hardest of the bunch is Broken Arrow and it's actually very easy. Soldier's Pass, Greasy Spoon and several other trails are up in this area.
I need to get up and run Broken Arrow at some point myself....just haven't made it yet.
HTH,
Sean

The story goes...I have a friend that is Navajo and he tells me that he knows THE man who runs the tours. He is not native. He marries a different Navajo woman every few years to keep his privilege, then sets them up in a house with spending money. Funny if it is true.

Thanks you guys... TCao's pics are gorgeous. Sean, again - good to see you back. And abophx if that's your store in your sig, I'm keeping my wife the hell away from it...
Keep your eye over on azfj.org..there are a couple of plans cooking for Pres Day weekend. Not sure when you plan on getting here, and nothing has been set in stone yet, but we are all on stand-by with camping gear packed.
Since you are staying in Sedona then you will have some great options..
Broken Arrow is iconic and you really have to run it..2-3hrs
Oak Creek Homestead is also very nice and a great place to have picnic lunch...2-3hrs
The only other one I would recommend is Dry Creek/Van Deren Cabin just because of how pretty it is.
Then when are you going to Flagstaff go up Schenbly Hill road to see more sight.
There is a old steam train that goes from Williams to the Grand Canyon that is cool for the little ones.
I will be involved in the Calico Cleanup on the 16th-17th but aval during the week with daytime free time if you want someone to hit trails with.
Also I have more detailed gps/trail guides for Sedona on adventure4x4.net or I can email them.
enjoy and we will be watching for you
