I'm looking into a position that would put me a bit northwest of Phoenix. I've been doing some reading about Phoenix and the surrounding area and have been getting a lot of mixed reviews. Most of the concerns I've seen about the area are the 3-6 months of oppressive heat, terrible traffic in and around the city, the air pollution level, and a lack of cultural stuff, good food, and things to do in the city, especially regarding nightlife.
I'm trying to figure out how much of this is accurate and how much is people just being unhappy. I realize that very few places will match the number of options I have in the food, culture, and social scenes as I am currently sandwiched in between Philadelphia and NYC. That level of diversity is not required but I would like to be able to get some decent Thai food or have a good chance of the big concert I want to see coming through town.
Basically what I want to know is whether you love, like, or loathe Phoenix and why. What kinds of things are important to you and why does/doesn't it work for you? Thanks in advance everyone!

Reason: Ey r spllin gud.
I've heard some good things about it.
-It get's HOT, but it's a "dry heat"
-You're from NJ, the NE is pretty polluted (any you mentioned Philly), so I don't think that would be an issue
-One of my colleagues goes there for business and always has a good time
It's a booming place, and like anywhere, it's all about what you make of it. I've lived all over the country and I've always found a good time, and a cool place to live and hang out.
Just my $.02

The "dry" heat is freaking oppressive...seriously! I absolutely hate it. I've been here since 1993 - you do NOT get used to it. Period.
The culture, there isn't any. There is not a good choice of food. The most ridiculous thing ever is trying to find good mexican food.....um...we should be able to find that, right??? WRONG. We thrive on chain restaurants here and it sucks.
The traffic sucks, but I think it does anywhere.
The pollution is nasty. They have days where they tell you if you have respiratory problems and/or are a senior citizen to stay in doors - and these days are quite common. When driving to work on the 51 Southbound everyday, as the city starts to come into view an giant brown cloud covers the whole valley - it's horrid.
I NEVER had allergies until I moved here. And I used to live around the woods and around TONS of pollen.
There really isn't all that much nightlife unless you go to Old Town Scottsdale filled with really horrendous fake gold digger chicks and gawd awful frat boys.
If you have kids or are planning to, keep in mind, we are 50th in education and have held that record for years now.....
Um, that is my advice. And yes, I live in AZ....and yes, I am MOVING out of AZ as soon as we can. We would be gone by now, but the pregnancy determined we would stay at least until she is born and a bit older.
OH, and every house is the same and you can basically touch your neighbors....you get no side yard, no front yard and no back yard. And you pay out the arse for this.
Right? Probably the wrong person to answer that post....oopsie.....

Decide where you're moving yet Kat?
Shane, not yet. We have about a year and a half left on our lease, however, we can break it if we want to after the first year, which would be October with no penalty. We need to get working on this. Dan is an architectural designer and needs to get his resume up to date.
Our first choice was San Diego, but we really started thinking more along the lines of smallish town, 4 seasons. We are still considering east coast area (upstate, WAY upstate NY), Johnson City, TN, and Canada is still on the back burner.
I still need to check out some places in CO too.
We've got time. Like I said, we don't want this baby to go to school here....and we plan on having more and I hate my doctor so much - he is fired after this baby, but also it's hard to get preggo here, as you have to try to get the baby cooked and out before the stupid heat hits. I'm ALMOST safe with this one, except it's supposed to be 95 on Sunday...too hot for my preggo butt!
dude...I'm from trenton/philly......been here 13 years......foods tough.....culture is here if you look for it.....and the heat....well....it ain't as bad as the jersey smell and the other 9 months rock!!!!
I'm single, 26, no kids yet and most likely none for awhile. I assume I'd be out of AZ long before that happened.
I've lived in Iowa, Missouri, New Mexico, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Australia. My parents live way upstate in New York.
I'd be taking this gig mainly for the job as it could be a very cool opportunity with a great company. I'm not looking for somewhere to settle down long term, more like a year or three.
I'm horribly upset that there is no good Mexican food, I figured that would be a given and I've missed it since I left Santa Fe.
Thanks for all the opinions so far, keep them coming!
