Painting / Coating

So, I installed my skids without any attempt at covering the bare metal. And while there are some BEAUTIFUL rust patterns on the underside (pictures to come soon!), I'm regretting not cleaning, priming & painting them prior to installation...or perhaps doing a Line-x job on them first.

Any thoughts or comments?

Take 'em off, clean 'em up, and spray bomb those puppies!

High temp barbecue flat black works awesome.

Re: Painting / Coating

I did the same thing. I have R&R the front skid and painted. Next the under belly, so much work.

Tip: If you buy BBuilt skids get it powder coated or paint them before putting them on.

Maybe Bud can give some input on if it is important to cover the bare metal.

Re: Painting / Coating

I had mine shot blasted and zinc phosphate coated, then just spray canned the crap out of them. I am rustophobic. I should have just got them in stainless, THEN painted them black.

Re: Painting / Coating

Okay, my BBs are scheduled to arrive on Friday (I can't wait) and I opted to not have them powdercoated for the sake of being able to apply paint when I tear the hell out of them. So... I've looked into paint for them and the options I've come up with are Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator + topcoat or POR15. The problem being that both of these products are pretty spendy. Are there any cheaper ways to go? I have two cans of black Tectyl paint which is a wax based suspension/leafspring paint, that my dad gave me after rebuilding his 73 Chevy. Anybody have any experience with it? Additionally, what sort of primer would one want to go with if they did the aforementioned high temp BBQ flat black? Okay, I'll finish with my 20 questions. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

ps Bud, if you have a paint preference for your skids, let me know.

Re: Painting / Coating

dont powdercoat armor unless its just for show or something. whats the point of spending the extra to only have it scraped off the first time you hit a trail?

paint it with something easy, I went with Rustoleum semi gloss black because I know I can always go to the store and itll be in stock.

Yep. Thats why I opted to NOT powdercoat them. How does the rustoleum hold up. I've never been a huge fan of the rustoleum product. Then again, because of that, I haven't used it in a long time.
