Ok all, We just received the Truck-Bez product # 20 TCSB Expedition series for our FJ. It turned out to be a great buy because of its ease of use, and luxurious sleeping capability. For a more in-depth review, check it out in the summer edition of Revik Magazine coming August 2012. Revik Magazine :rocker:

Expedition Series: #20 TCSB -$170 (Canvas)
Weekender Series: #40 VTCSB -$70 (Vinyl)

Truck-Bedz TM, based in Laguna Hills Ca, specializes in air mattresses that fit truck beds. This concept is very simple and old fashioned if you think about it, and yet not many people use this great product. Especially in the overlanding community where bad weather is common and quick set up is necessary. Having the safety of your enclosed vehicle and the comfort of a well fitted air mattress may replace the need for some RTT's. There are many models and most trucks are supported by one or more of the models. There are also two different styles of beds. The Weekender is a thin vinyl version that is cost effective but more susceptible to tears and punctures. And the Expedition series, which is made of heavy duty 420d Nylon Backpack Cloth and can support up to 4,000 lbs!

So it arrived very quickly, and the packaging was very sturdy keeping our bed well protected (as if it needs protection...). The Expedition series comes with the bed, repair kit, 60 sec pump that inflates, and deflates the mattress in 1 minute, as well as a carrying case. Just touching the fabric you can tell how strong it is, and hopefully we will never need that patch kit. After taking it out of the box we laid it out in our FJ to see what modifications we needed to make if any. To our satisfaction, we did not need to make any mods. Connecting the pump to the cigarette lighter outlet, we filled our bed in 60 sec! As if that isn’t enough, the pump also doubles as a deflation pump and sucks most of the air out in 60 sec again! Perfect fit! The FJ Cruiser bed requires the bottom of the back seat to be removed but fits well and sits across the top of the center console. Other models of the Truck-Bedz are designed to be used with the tailgate up or down depending on the model.

A note for the FJ Cruiser:
You must remove the bottom of the rear seats, and slide the front seats forward so the bed can extend all the way against the back of the front seats. There was another member on the FJC Forums who stated that he wedged the seats under the mattress so it didn't hang down in the gap between the seats, but I was unable to recreate this. I did however try sleeping on it without any support under the space as shown in the pics below with out any problems. It seems that when you have your weight on the mattress, unless your head is heavier than your body... (no comment) then the mattress will not sag in the gap because of the strength of the material and the rigidity of the fully inflated mattress.

To answer any questions about whether or not it takes care of the hump from laying down the back seats, I cannot answer as I have a leveling platform that takes care of the hump. However, I can say that other members have stated that it does remove the hump and I tend to believe it due to how it performed over the gap as stated earlier.

Also, the website says something about the center console getting in the way? No problems here. The mattress should sit on top of the back of the console for a few inches, but that is fine since it is the same height as the seats folded down.

So how comfy is it? Lets just say, it was enough to make me want to take a nap right there! With enough room to sit straight up and stretch out fully in our FJ, this is a great product to buy for any one who likes to camp out of their vehicle!

Great review Revick. I appreciate the pics. That definitely doesn't look like a balloon type air mattress. It would seem that the thick material and quilting helps it hold it's shape without stretching, etc. That definitely beats a tent. I just need storage to get all of my gear out if the way!

Very nice. When mine blows a hole or leaks I may just have to get this one. Nice write up

^^^What he said!

I like it, but I wish the FJ had come with a door release on the inside of the back door...

Still, that's not Truck-Bedz fault so I gotta give them a thumbs up for actually making this. :bigthumb:

I just bought one for my camping trip in Gorman and it was very comfortable I highly recommend it. you have to.remove the rear seat that folds up for it to perfectly fit thought. if you are into camping.or do overnight trips id definately get one.

Hey quick question, what end do you put your head at? and i see there is about a foot that just hangs unsupported between the backseat and and center consul. Do you have any issue with that? does it sag under your weight? Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks for the door latch link!

About the unsupported area behind the front seats: I don't notice much sag there because when it is fully inflated it is quite rigid (yet still comfortable). Partly to do with the material, but I slept with my head towards the front and did not notice a sag. That side is the widest due to the wheel wells so most people would sleep that way. I did however sleep the other way and it worked well also.

*******Camping Update*********

Just got back from a 3 day camping trip up in the sierras. Had a blast and the truck bed worked great! There was enough room for my girl and my self to sleep comfortably. Length could be a little tight if you are over 6ft, but I'm 5'10 and I was able to stretch out slightly. Filled up fast and the 2 ports allow super fast deflation.

I removed my rear seat bottoms so there was enough room for the mattress but with them out it fits perfectly. I know some guys wedge the seat cushions under the head to prop it up slightly, but I don't like sleeping inclined.

I used one for my camping trip in the UP. Never slept in the FJ, used it in my tent. Comfortable and quick to fill/deflate. Seems very durable also. May try it out in the FJ just to say I did.

Didn't work for me. Got turned on to the idea of getting one through this forum, and I bought one of the expensive ones ( $ 160 or so ) early August for my month long Colorado/Utah camping trip. It gave out and sprung what I believe may be an unfixable leak my last week (left me in a bad spot too). It will be my first and last air mattress. From now on I'm going to just go with backpackers padding - lower tech and won't leak.

I'm sorry if I'm deflating anyone's bubble about this. I've read all the wonderous reviews and such. Perhaps I'm just someone who's hard on things. All I can say is I won't be using anymore of these and wouldn't recommend it. Sorry again.

Hey that's an honest experience, and I want to hear all sides. I got stuck sleeping in my FJ with only a thin thermarest and it was miserable! I'm on the fence for an air mattress due to leaks, and lack of insulation in cold as with all air mattresses. An RTT is too much for me, and heavy as hell. The old fashioned tent has been my home lately;)

I returned mine for a tent and queen sized air mattress for same price as the Truck-Bedz mattress. The Truck-Bedz mattress was decent, but just not worth the price and the hassle. Had to clear everything out of the truck, remove part of the back seat so it layed somewhat flat, move the front seats way up, then you still only had room for 1 avg sized person comfortably.

Exactly FJC Mike. Its a really tight fit. My theory as to what happened to mine is that there are two valves that ram up tight against the driver's side and passenger side front seats, which, as FJ Mike said, must be slid all the way forward, and the backrest part tilted all the way forward too, to get the thing to fit. I may have got one of those two valves kinked against the back of the seats while inflating the thing, or forcing the inflated thing into position against the seats, and overly stressed the seams on the valves, as that it where it seems to be leaking. That's why I suspect it may be unfixable. But if I'm right about that, then the thing's too delicate for me. That's why I currently have no plans to use it anymore. When it left me down I was out in the middle of nowhere, and I had to struggle to come up with a setup on which I could sleep, and I had to use some of my blankets for padding that I needed on top of me to keep warm (nights were cold high up). Finally, in Silverton CO I found a sporting goods store where I was able to buy myself a therma rest backpacking pad, and that helped. My intentions at this point are to buy a couple more of those.

By the way, my wife and I were able to sleep comfortably in the back of the FJ, when setup as described above. I'm about six feet; 215 lbs. She's a bit on the small side; not exactly sure her height. But we managed. That was before I sprung the leak in the Truck-Bedz. I was alone at that point as she had flown back home.

We're thinking of buying a small tow behind camping trailer. The problem with going camping for a month 2000 miles from home is that one needs a fair amount of stuff. If one's intent is to sleep in the FJ, then one is forced to just about unload the truck every night in order to set it up to sleep in. What I did was set up a lean too out of plastic tarpulin under which I put my stuff. It was workable but quite a hassle.

Twin. It fits with the seats all the way forward, or you can remove one of the small sections from the end but have a shorter bed. I put a 1" piece of memory foam on top, then a mattress cover, then a twine sized fitted sheet. This has worked well for years now.

I don't know if this is the same quality as the Lucid but you can't beat the price:

I'll try to take a pic later today.
