I am looking for some advice. I'm making a trip to Colorado in July. Part of the time will be in a condo and part of the time will be spent camping. With a wife and kid I know I will run out of storage room inside. I am looking for some storage containers for additional dry storage that are not too tall that could be put on my factory roof rack with a Baja Rack basket up front. I would be storing camping and other outdoor gear. I am trying to stay away from a Thule or Yakima type mounted cargo box so the gear could be removed in the boxes rather than piece by piece and the boxes used for storage while camping. I would prefer something sturdy enough that I coud use cable locks to secure it to the rack to prevent theft if we stop overnight at a hotel. Any suggestions, personal preference, or advice is appreciated.

You might try some aluminum military surplus cases. They range in size, are durable, and usually waterproof. Most that I have seen are short and wide with a removable top half. They also have metal handles to loop your cable lock through. Check ebay or a local surplus retailer.

I use rifle cases on my Baja Rack. Each one is held on with six U-bolts through the back. Takes a while to remove them or install them but they are solid. I've never locked them because I feel that might just attract potential thieves thinking I actually have guns in them.
