Mods/admins, a section devoted to camping gear such as tents, roof top tents, cooking gear, sleeping bags, ect, would be cool.
If you have a RTT, post 'em up.
I have debated for awhile now on what type to buy, and after lots of research on price, will it fit my stock rack, I decided on the Autohome AirLand medium model like member Wayne (KD7NAC_07FJ) has on his rig.
It works with the stock Rack, the only thing I needed to get extra was the Yakima crossbars and Lowrider towers for the tent to sit on.
That stuff just showed up today, and Autohome just offloaded their trailer from Italy where these are made, and are shipping my tent to the local dealer today.
Mine will be installed next Friday if it makes it in on time.
Here it is on Wayne's FJ.
I will update my buildup thread and website with pictures and links after I get it.
Getting excited here, as I use to do a lot of camping in the past when I had a nice tent trailer when my boy's were much younger.
Getting back into it again, but it is going to be more spartan this time around with less luxuries, which is OK with me.
It will be nice to get off of work on a Friday, shower up at home, and then leave with the rig already packed from the night before with the ARB fridge full of vittles, H20, and other goodies.
Still have a few more items to pick up such as the Pett crapper system, and a small table to set the camp stove on.
I have a nice folding table now, but it is a little big to bring along in the FJ.
Evidently, no problem with overloading the stock roof rack!
That is for sure, it is a lot stronger than folk's give it credit.
The place where I am getting mine installed next week has done a few FJs in WA. state already with stock racks.
They just add the Yakima or Thule bars to the rack as Wayne did in the pictures in my first post in the thread.

this is the type i currently have . I am thinking of going to the Clipper style tent in the future ( some time later this year ) Although this traditional style appeals to me.
Cheers
BRAND? PRICE? WHERE YOU GET IT? WOULD YOU RECCOMEND IT?
I have been looking at 3 of these online basically the same basic tent but different brands, in the price range of 730 to 1600 bucks.
I love the auto home but you lose all your rack storage space with it. Now if someone could make a hard case tent that mounted to the FJ mounts with a rack on top of it, I think they would make mad money.

I would recomed them in al but the harshest weather / They can be very noisy in gusty winds. I have some Land rover owners coming up for a trip from the U.S to Ontario that will be pickng some up. but it really is not practical for me to even discuss selling these in the US . I am just a small Canadian Vendor . My primary Product is my Winches ( they are my pride and joy )and they have developed for Canadian conditions which can be somewhat testing at times.
the best advise i can offer you is to try and get the Aluminum base models and not the plywood ( generally the plywood base models tend to have less quality built in to them ) and plywood is not a desirable feature for a roof top tent. My model is a strong seller in the Australian market but not so much here in Canada or the U.S for that matter. But the quality is there i would sugges tyou take a look at the specs of my model and try to match something similar in the U.S as i retail mine for a stupid price but it is only because i personally want to carry some in stock
you can click on my sig and look for roof top tents ( my Daughter was gracious enough to model the interior shots for me to give some perspective to the size.
Cheers.
